Program Description:

Somalia is blessed with the longest coastline in Africa. However, the nation lacks Marine Science professionals to help protect and profit from these vast waters and coasts. The Bachelor of Science in Fisheries & Aquatic Science is a four year program designed to produce graduates with well-rounded subject matter knowledge as well as strong research and technical skills. 

Department Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the Bachelor Degree in Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences program, students will be able to: 
  1. Discuss the complex interactions between the biological, chemical, geological and physical aspects of the ocean.
  2. Use technical skills in fishery sciences.
  3. Conduct independent scientific research in the marine context.
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the marine context, using the scientific method.
  5. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication of Marine Science topics.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to identify and explain the salient global maritime issues and their implications for Somalia and the region. 
  7. Successfully demonstrate results of the strong experiential learning components offered in the program.

What is Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences? 
Fisheries & Aquatic S
ciencee involves studies in aquacuatic animal health, conservation and management of natural environments and sustainable fisheries. Students study about the seas, oceans, and coastal habitats. What do the Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences graduates often do? Holders of a bachelor's degree often perform research, laboratory testing, instruction, marine conservation work, fisheries management, or work related to fisheries microbiology and biochemistry, fish population dynamics, fish ecology, or aquatic pollution control.

Where do Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences graduates often work?
Fisheries and Aquatic scientists may work as marine researchers at government institutions, universities, related industries, non-governmental organizations, or in the private business sector. They may work as marine teachers, fisheries laboratories specialists, or as marine life conservationists in all different sectors.
